TAM–Dr. Thomas, 62. Beloved father, husband, son, brother, uncle, teacher, artist and friend, died in New York City on February 27. He was a renaissance man, earning degrees in physics, film-making, public health and sociomedical sciences, and going on to teach at Columbia, Herbert Lehman College, and St. Joseph’s in Philadelphia. Tom was a pillar of the city’s Chinese community; he was the first Chinese-American appointed to the Board of Trustees of the City University of New York, and established a diverse group of Asian American organizations; the Chinatown Health Clinic, the Asian American Film Festival, the Asian American Higher Education Council and the Asian/Asian American Research Institute. Tom was an avid filmmaker himself; one of his many short films was exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Tom was a devoted father to his daughter Anika and the dedicated eldest son in his family. He is survived by Anika, his wife Margaret, his mother Shui Oi, his two sisters Pearl and Ning Chu, and his brother Heung. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 9th, from 2:30-5:00pm at the Asian/ Asian American Research Institute at 25 West 43rd Street, 18th Floor (between 5th and 6th Avenues).
